  how to make a referral

  1. As a first step, the immediate safety and emergency medical treatment of the child are a priority.

  2. The protection of children is everyone’s business, if you want to pass on information about yourself, or a child you are worried about, then you should contact your local authority social work office. You can find the number for your local office here (click to link to the Locations and Contacts section) In an emergency you should contact the Police.

  3. Out with office hours (that is out with Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) there is a social work out of hours service available. For Aberdeen City phone 01224 693936, for Aberdeenshire phone 0845 840 0070 and for Moray phone 0845 756 5656.

  4. It is helpful if you have basic information about the child and his or her family available to pass on, for example full names and dates of birth of household members, the child’s home address, names/dates of birth/address of any other significant adults in the child’s life, names of any other professionals involved with the child/family, the reasons for your concern(s). Any other information you think may be relevant.

  5. It is possible to have informal discussion with Social Work or Police about the circumstances of children you are concerned about. However, if Social Work or the Police believe there are grounds for further action in such cases then they will take the necessary action. As a member of the public you have a right to remain anonymous and that right will be respected.

  6. If you are a member of the public and you do not want to make a referral directly to Social Work or the Police, you can talk to another professional who knows the child, for example, a teacher, health visitor, GP. However, remember that a delay in passing on concerns to Social Work or the Police could result in a child suffering further abuse that may otherwise have been prevented.
